No Shortage of Available Coaches...

With Ron Wilson the latest to be axed, there really is a nice crop of UFA coaches on the market. Toronto, San Jose, Colorado, Ottawa, Atlanta and Florida all need coaches, while Vancouver, Carolina and Tampa Bay all still could make coaching changes before the beginning of next season. If ever you were going to hire a new coach, now is the time, as the coaching coaching available is amazing.

The most interesting part of the these coaches to me is how I realised I view some of the available coaches. I still picture Ron Wilson coaching the Caps, I still Paul Maurice coaching the Hurricanes, Laviollette coachings the Isles, Burns coaching the Bruins, and Quennville coaching the Blues. I don't have to go back too far for these things to be current, which just shows how often coaching decisions are made. Most of the mentioned are likely to find work before next season, while Laviollette may get to keep his job with the Canes'. If I'm a team looking for a coach, I act fast.

The best coach available is said to be Quennville, followed by Burns. The Leafs, Sharks and Senators all have to have serious interest in these two guys. After them, you have what I call the second tier guys: Wilson, Quinn, Torterella (who I believe will be fired and replaced by Barry Melorse soonish), Maurice and Hartley. Then you have your wild cards in DeBoer of the OHL's rangers, and Buffalo's all-star farm-team coach Cunneyworth, who I still think has a very good chance going to Ottawa, though they will likely go for someone with more NHL experience. None of these guys are bad choices, and they all have possible shots at getting hired.

Lets get out my crystal ball, and see what I can predict...

Quennville to Toronto, if they can get a GM in place before he panics and signs with someone else. It was a mutual decision for him to leave Colorado, and part of that is because he's interested in the Leafs' job.

Burns to Ottawa, because they failed with Paddock, and need someone with experience to take over.

DeBoer to Florida, I know he's talked to an American team about a coaching job, and at the time Florida was the only one with a vacant spot.

Cunneyworth to San Jose, he's good with young talent, and San Jose has plenty. If Buffalo is going to let him go, they'd rather it be to the Western Conference. Maybe letting San Jose talk to Cunneyworth will be part of Brian Campbell coming back to Buffalo.

Torteralla out, Melrose in for Tampa Bay, the rumours have been everywhere, hard to argue with them.

Vignault stays in Vancouver, Gillis will give him a team and see what Vignault can do with it. If he fails, he's fired, but he'll be given a chance.

Laviollette will also keep his job in Carolina, he'll be given one more shot.

Pat Quinn goes to Atlanta, I know he's interested in the job, and when he realizes he can't land any of the others (Florida is the only other job I see him having a chance at), he'll try his luck with the Thrashers.

Colorado is a tough one for me. Patrick Roy doesn't fit right now. Pat Quinn is a maybe, and they'll take a run at Pat Burns. The only coach I haven't really used up for the Avs is Paul Maurice, so I guess I'll insert him into the slot for now, but I highly douby Maurice gets a chance at the NHL level for awhile, if at all.

Tomorrow could be a big news day in Leafland, as Dave Nonis will meet with the MLSE big boys. I really want a new GM to be named sooner rather than later, I am tired of talking about the Leafs, and they're my favourite team!

and one last thought, poor Dallas. Detroit has outplayed them from the start, and are looking like the team to beat. A Detroit / Pittsburgh final has me very excited already...

Avs Axe Quenneville

Joel Quenneville has been fired as the coach of the Colorado Avalanche. I really don't agree with this move, as injuries were by far the teams downfall. They were underdog first round winners over the Wild, but just didnt have the man-power to beat the Wings. That, and the fact that the team wasn't given a reliable goaltender in Quiennevilles four years. Yesterday I said Hartley, Robinson and Burns were the only coaches the Leafs were allowed to hire. Add Joel to that list, he's a great coach and I think this is an unfair firing.

More on the Leafs: Jim Nill and Ken Holland are off of Toronto's list. The Red Wings will not give the Leafs permission to speak to either of them. Reports also are suggesting that Dave Nonis will be in Toronto early next week to have a formal interview with the club. The saga continues...

Brunnstrum Signs With Dallas...

The "best player not playing in North America" has signed a deal with the Dallas Stars. I believe it's a basic three year, entry level deal...

Eklund moment of the day = "Jose Theodore to Ottawa (E4)"

How do you give something an E4, especially this? Theodore will probably go back to Colorado, who hasn't even been eliminated for a week...Ottawa has two goalies, that has to be resolved before they can even think about Theodore. And why would they replace one question mark goaltender for another? Eklund and his dog are really stretching their 15 minutes...

Looking At The Leafs...Again...

Leave it to the media to make the Leafs GM search their main headline, when we are on the verge of one of the best series in a long time is about to begin. Detroit and Dallas should be an epic series, both teams very evenly matched. But here we are (including myself), wrapped up in the saga that is the Toronto Maple Leafs.

First, the Leafs contacted the Vancouver Canucks about the possibility of talking to their former GM Dave Nonis. Their request was granted, and the Leafs have already talked to him. Next, they asked the Sharks to speak to GM Doug Wilson, a man who a lot of people in the industry believed would be fired by the Sharks. Apparently, Wilson's job is safe, as the Leafs were denied their request to speak to him. Who's next?

If the Leafs are going to do their search right, Jim Rutherford and Doug Risebrough will be contacted in the next 48 hours. If you listen to Eklund (which I don't recommend), Jay Feaster is also on that list. Neil Smith and Doug Armstrong will also be contacted. Bob Gainey, well, I don't think so but his name is worth throwing out their, along with Glen Sather.

Then there are the four remaining teams. Detroit's Ken Holland, and possible Jim Nill and Scotty Bowman, could all be contacted at the end of their playoff run. Bobby Clarke, who is still employed by the Flyers, could be talked to following their playoff run. I don't believe anyone on Dallas or Pittsburgh (Craig Patrick isn't an option from what I've been told) will be contacted following their exits. So if the playoffs go as I think they will (Dallas/Pittsburgh final), all candidates will be available within a three week period. So with all the candidates on the table, who gets the job?

The Answer: Brian Burke. I've been talking to a lot of people over the last 24 hours, and a lot of them still believe Burke is the guy. Some say the Leafs will wait it out, with Fletcher or Nonis or both running the show until 2009 when Burke is available 100%, but some believe Burke will be in place for the 2008 UFA season, and maybe even the draft. If the Leafs stick with Fletcher, or hire Nonis, Burke will still be in media, with everyone predicting he ends up in Toronto after his contract expires. Burke has told Ducks' management that he will move east once his contract expires. So in the end, it makes sense for Ducks ownership to let Brian go now, and avoid not only the fact that he's leaving anyways, but the media shadow that would follow the Ducks all season long. Burke is the guy that Toronto wants, and Toronto is where Burke wants to be. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out.

If Burke isn't the guy, then I hope the Leafs stay clear of Nonis. The Leafs need to start re-building now, and I don't believe they could do that with a "temporary" GM. As a Leaf fan, I'm disapointed that Doug Wilson isn't an option. This guy has made San Jose a very dangerous team, both through trades, free agency, and especially through developping young talent. I've always felt he was the best man for the job, maybe even ahead of Brian Burke. Being based out of Toronto, having Burke here would be the most fun, as this guy really knows how to play with the media. He wouldn't fold under pressure, and he would do what it takes to bring Toronto back to the top third of the league. That said, if he's not available for this summer, I truely believe it's time for the Leafs to move on and to get a guy who can start building now. Looking at realistic choices, Doug Armstrong is near the top of my list. Doug Risebrough is another guy, who if the Leafs can get him, should be in the top three. I'd avoid Jim Rutherford, Bobby Clarke and Neil Smith, as I just don't feel they are what Toronto needs. Yes, all have had success, but not in the new NHL. Carolina won the cup, but with a team assembled pre-lockout. Since, Rutherford has struggled, making deals that have hurt the team more than they've helped. The one move I'll give him was taking a chance on Samsonov, which has turned out brilliantly.

The Leafs now also have an open coaching slot. One name I've heard a lot about is Doug Gilmore. This doesn't make sense to me. Doug Gilmore would love to coach, but you can't throw this guy right into the biggest pressure coaching job in the league. The Leafs have one coach right now, Keith Acton. The other two assistants were either fired or given a new title. The theory by some is that Nonis will be GM, Gilmore will be coach, and then Burke comes in next year, with his own coach. Bad Idea. Bring in a solid GM now, and make Gilmore an assistant coach. Down the road when it comes time to fire the new coach, then bring a more experienced Doug Gilmore in to coach your team. If I'm Toronto, there are three coaches I talk to, and only three. Bob Hartley, Pat Burns, and Larry Robinson. Hartley has won a Stanley Cup and Calder Cup as a head coach, Burns has won three Jack Adams trophys (Coach of the Year), while Robinson won two cups with the Devils, one as a head coach, one as an assistant (Robinson still employed by the Devils as an assistant).

Brunnstrum down to four teams (E5+I)

For those who havent heard the news, Eklund's "E" system now has an I in it, with the I standing for Imminent...now you know...

Anyways, Fabian Brunnstrum is down to four teams: Detroit, Dallas, Montreal and Toronto. He will call his agent JP Barry tomorrow and either make his decision, or cut the teams down to two. Don't you worry, Hockeyleaks.com will be all over that decision. At this point, it's hard to say who he will end up. Toronto has the lineup space for him, and has several Sweedes on the team that would make Fabian feel at home. Detroit has the swedes and a presidents trophy, but they don't have the top six room for him, which appears to be the most important. Montreal doesn't really have the room, or a large cast of swedes. This leaves Dallas, who I think may have the top spot in this race. I could see the kid fitting into Dallas' top six. If I had to make a guess, and this is all this is, no insight on this whatsoever, I'd put the order as Dallas, Toronto, Detroit and Montreal...maybe we'll know who wins tomorrow. I will say this, the Leafs have done all they could to get this guy. They've promised him a chance to play, they've had Salming talk to him, they've travelled to Sweden a few times to meet with him, and Fletcher has met face-to-face with his agent. I really believe this kid could be the first of many good steps taken by Toronto to fix the mess it's currently in. The next step comes at the draft with that 7th overall pick (Still feeling they take Filatov with that pick).

Great Canada vs. USA game today, how great is it that TSN is covering these games online? This should be a great world championship. Is anyone else wondering where Dany Heatley's amazing play was for Ottawa?

I know a lot of you would love for me to talk about rumours like our friend Eklund, but seriously, you can't start rumour talk this early! Accordign to the big E (not Eric Lindros), Demitra is going to Vancouver, Liles is going to Vancouver, and Streit is going to NYR. Write those down, none will happen....

You can blame our friends at NBC for the playoffs not starting to Thursday. Question of the day : How mean is the NHL? You give us the best game of the season (aka San Jose vs. Dallas - game six), and then you make us wait for what seems like forever for another puck drop...oh well, I can't wait for this third round, should be a couple of great series'

Round 3 Picks....

(2) Pittsburgh vs. (6) Philly

Both teams won their series' in five games, both looked very impressive in doing so. Both teams have had great goaltending, while their offenses have not been too bad either. Overall, this could be a tight series, but I just don't see the Penguins losing it. How great a story would it be for the Flyers to go from last place, to the stanley cup final, in just 12 months? It's possible, but it's an uphill battle in my opinion. Crosby, Malkin, Hossa and Fleury will lead this team to the cup final...

(1) Detroit vs. (5) Dallas

All week i've been telling myself that Detroit would top Dallas in the third round if that was the match up. San Jose would beat Detroit, but Dallas wouldn't. My Mind was changed last night in what may have been the best game I've ever seen. Lets compare the two teams by position. In goal, Dallas is the huge favourite. Turco has been nothing short of stellar, while Detroit has had their questions between the pipes. Yes, Osgood is unbeaten, but he's played against a mediocre Nashville team, and an injury depleted Colorado team. Dallas is on a much higher level than the two teams he has previously faced. On defense, I'm going to give this to Dallas. I know a lot of you may disagree, but Zubov and Norstrom are playing the best hockey of their careers. Sure, Detroit has Lidstrom, but as a whole, I really like the defensive game Dallas is bringing into this series. Up front, Detroit has the edge, as the Mule, along with Datsyuk and Zetterberg have been unstoppable to this point. With that said, Dallas has Modano, Richards and Morrrow, all three of which have been playing some amazing hockey.

Hockeyleaks.com Prediction: I will say Dallas in 7, but if they took it in 5 or 6, I wouldn't be surprised at all...



On another note, Eklund is already E3ing Demitra to Vancouver? The playoffs are not even over yet!!! This guy is just crazy...

Deadline Impact Players...

Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver were three teams who went into the trade deadline hoping to land an impact player. All three missed out, and are out of the playoffs. With that said, there were three teams who dealt for impact players, and all three are still around, though one team will be soon gone.

The Penguins gave up a lot of young talent to get Hossa, and so far, he's been just what they've needed. Two goals today put the Penguins ahead to the third round. In total, Hossa has 10 points in 8 games, and has played very well.

Brad Richards was the biggest name moved at the deadline, and has been huge for the Stars. 11 points in 11 games, his playmaking is a big reason that the Sharks are likely onto the third round. He has been a perfect addition to this team, and compliments Morraeu and Ribeiro nicely.

Finally, Brian Campbell is a huge reason why the Sharks are still alive. Seven points in 11 games, with the biggest being in the form of his lone goal last game to keep the Sharks alive. I honestly believe that the winner of this series will beat the Wings next round, but I'm sure a guy named "The Mule" will have something to say about that.

So in past years, deadline deals have been called unneccesary. The teams who make the deals rarely go all the way, once again showing that in the NHL you have to build from within. This year things could be different, as the Penguins, Stars and Sharks are all much improved since the deadline, muchly because of their moves. While Detroit and Philly did little at the deadline to make themselves better, they will give it their all, I think this year the deals made at the deadline will be the difference.

Avery Done For Season

Lacerated Spleen in the first period of last nights game. Shows how tough the guy really is, as he finished the game, then almost died afterwards...Hockeyleaks wishes him a quick and full recovery...


MTL and Philly go tonight, I look for the Flyers to keep playing their game and to take a 3-1 series lead. What is with all this Price controversy? The Habs are where they are because of this guy, no way should they even be questioning this situation. Carbs should be fired for even suggesting Halak could start tonight...Price is young, stop messing with his confidence...

SJ and Dallas could end tonight, should be another close battle. Im going to say San Jose extends the series tonight, but it could go either way. Dallas is playing extremely well tonight. If SJ loses tonight, I expect some serious off-season changes for this team.

And how about Jagr? "this could be my last game"...way to make it all about yourself Jaromir. Your team is down 3-0 and thats what you want to say? A UFA on July 1st, I still think he'll resign in New York.

GM Theories

Pittsburgh is currently up 1-0 after 2, the game is on CBC in Canada and NBC in the states. Tonight, TSN will have Dallas / San Jose and I believe Versus will have it for our US fans.

So as we are less than two months from the draft, it really is time to start discussiing the General Manager situation we currently have in the league. Toronto has been the target of all the talk lately, and for good reason. They don't have a full-time GM at the moment, but we are being told they will before the draft. We were all led to believe that Burke was the guy, but commish Gary stepped in and nixed any plans Burke had of leaving the Ducks. So who are they looking at now. No interviews will begin anytime soon, from what I've been told. The Leafs want to talk to Ken Holland, but i believe they will do so without success. Glen Sather and Doug Wilson are two other guys they'd like to talk to, but both are likely staying put. Doug Mclean, Doug Armstrong and Jim Rutherford are two guys that are also on their short-ish list, and all three could be interviewed tomorrow if the Leafs wanted. Right now, it's anyone's guess, but the Leafs would like it if teams like Detroit, San Jose and NYR would get eliminated sooner rather than later, as they'd like to resolve this ASAP.

The Leafs are one of about six teams seriously being considered by Fabian Brunstrum. It's believed he would like to know who the GM wil be before he signs. The Leafs may lose him for that very reason. The Leafs have buyouts and trades to attend to. Fletcher wants the new GM to make all of these moves, as he understands how important it is for someone new to shape the franchise, and for him to not act too soon. While he may not want Tucker or Kubina, the new GM may. This doesn't mean Cliff won't make decisions on these guys, but MLSE and Fletcher would rather the new face of the franchise's front office do it.

Ken Holland is the best GM available, but it's doubtful he's leaving Detroit. Doug Wilson would be my second choice, but his lack of cup success may turn the Leafs away. After that, I'd go with Doug Armstrong. Brad Richards aside, his team is currently playing very well in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Craig Patrick and Doug Mclean (why are half of the GMs named Doug?) should be avoided, as all success can be thanked on having very high draft picks for very many years. Glen Sather and Bob Gainey can both be avoided in this discussion, as I don't believe either is going anywhere anytime soon. As for Dave Nonis, maybe he will be brought in, but it won't be as GM. He doesn't fit what the Leafs are looking for.

Toronto is not the only team with GM questions. Vancouver just hired Mike Gillis, which in my opinion was a terrible mistake. This guy has no experience, and inherits a team in need of a lot of work. I am hearing all the time that Gillis inherits a lot of great things, such as a ton of young defensive prospects and the best goalie in the world. This may be true, but that doesn't mean Vancouver isn't in serious trouble. The team has no offense up front, and will likely lose Morrison and Naslund this season. Linden and Miller are also going to be needed to be replaced. So three of the clubs best offensive players over the last six or seven years are going to need to be replaced. You have the Sedins up front, followed by a whole lot of nothing. Your defense is basically set, but your goaltending may not be. Talk is Luongo wants out, and is not happy with the direction of the franchise (heard this one before?). Talk continues to circulate that Spezza and Emery could be on their way to Vancouver for Luongo. Spezza is a risk, as the guy has played with two of the best wingers in the game for the majority of his career. Can he be successful as the main guy? I don't have that answer. Vancouver is in a world of trouble, and I don't see this team getting better any time soon. Gillis was not the man to fix this ship. I can confirm that Doug Armstrong, Doug Wilson and John Ferguson Jr were all contacted about this job. I would have taken all three (yes, even JFJ) before I would have taken Gillis. The best man for this job would have been Pat Quinn, hands down.

Bryan Burke remains in Anaheim, and wow does he have a mess on his hands. The Ducks have 49 million commited already for next season. Selanne is a UFA, and will likely not be back. Remember that the Ducks were only mediocre until his return. Niedermayer is an unknown, but if he doesn't comeback that would give the Ducks some much needed breathing room. That said, I still believe he can be a premier defenseman in this league. Doug Weight is a UFA and likely won't be back, while Corey Perry is a RFA, and will be looking for a big pay cheque. If Burke doesn't get this guy signed by July 1st, which is very possible, he will attract offer sheets, which the Ducks wouldn't be able to compete with given their current salary cap situation. The Ducks situation is not a pretty one, and they are just lucky Burke is still around to fix his own mess. If any GM in the league can get the Ducks out of this mess, it's probably Burke.

Hockeyleaks 08-09 Fantasy Team League

Number of allowed teams: 30
Cost to enter: $12
Prize Pool: 1st - $150 2nd - $75 3rd – 40 4th – 25 5 - $10

Rules:
When 30 teams have entered and paid the entry cost, a draft will begin. All 30 teams will be randomly selected to determine a draft order. Entrants will then pick one NHL team, in the order in which is determined randomly. No team can be selected twice.
On July 15th, rosters will be set. You will take control of your team and all of it’s prospects. For example, if you select Detroit, you get all of Detroits players and prospects. It is your responsibility to pick 9 starting forwards, four starting defenseman and two goalies. These will be the ones which accumulate points. Point structure will be set sometime between the draft and July 15th.

Pool will be run through a message board, while points and standings will be kept on officepools.com. All transactions will be made via the message board. You may trade players with the other 29 players. All trades and transactions must be approved by an administrator, and will be done within 24 hours. You may at any time switch one of your active players for one of your bench players. All switches must be approved by an administrator, and will be done within 24 hours.

After July 15th, all players who are not signed will be on waivers. To submit a waiver claim, you must file it on the correct forum. The starting waiver order will be the opposite of the draft order. For example, whoever has the 30th team, will have the first spot in the waiver order. When a team makes a waiver claim, they move the 30th waiver spot, and the person in the 2nd spot will move up to the 1st spot. Waiver claims take 48 hours to go through. A person making a waiver claim must drop one of their top 12 forwards / or one of their top 6 defenseman / or one of their top 2 goalies.

Round 2: Best Ever?

This second round of the Stanley Cup has me more excited than any previous set of rounds that I can remember. There are four great series, all of which could go the distance. Time to take a look at each one, and who I think will win it.

East

(1) Montreal vs. (6) Flyers

Both teams must be tired from a gruelling 7 game series, and both will not have much time to rest in between. Both have momentum going in, which should make this series very exciting right from the start. In goal, I will give the edge to Biron. Price started to show his rookie-ness in the last series, while Biron's playoff experience should help him out. On defense, the Habs take this one by a nose. Up front, it's basically a draw. In the end, I'm taking the underdog, as I think the Flyers have what it takes to get past the Habs. I know most of you won't agree, but there is just something about the Canadiens that makes me feel they don't have what it takes just yet to be legitimate cup contenders. Thats still a few years away. Flyers in 7.

(2) Pittsburgh vs. (5) NYR

This series is going to be amazing. The Penguins did an amazing job against the Sens, and now will be faced with a tougher test in the Rangers. Lundqvist is better than Fleury, so NYR has the edge in goal. On defense, I should take the Rangers, but I will take the Penguins only because I saw the way they shut down the Sens last series. Up front, you can't not pick a team with Crosby and Malkin, it just can't be done. If Hossa ever gets hot, this team may be unstoppable up front. The Pens win this series, but the Rangers put up one hell of a fight. Penguins in 7.

West

(1) Detroit vs. (6) Colorado

Both number one seeds getting knocked out in the second round? That's the way I see it. I've said all along, when healthy the Avs are the best team in the NHL, and guess what, they're pretty damn healthy. In goal, Detroit isn't quite sure who their #1 is. Hasek was, now it's Osgood, and at some point it will probably change back to Hasek. Theodore is the man in Colorado, and did I mention he's on his contract year? Theo is playing the best hockey since his Hart days, and that isn't going to change. On defense, you can't not pick a team with Lidstrom. That being said, Colorado's defense isn't bad itself. Finally, the Wings win the offense category by a hair, as Datsyuk and Zetterberg are too much of a force to be beaten. Forsberg, Stastny and Sakic, however, can put on quite a show of their own. This is the series to watch, and really it could go either way (as these all could). I'm taking Colorado in 6.

(2) San Jose vs. (5) Dallas

I took Dallas to go out in 5, and here they still are, hammering the Ducks in 6. I'm bettng against them again. The sharks have a better goalie, a better defense, and a more balanced offense. The sharks faced a tough series againt Calgary, and will use it as motivation to jet past the sharks and into the western final. Thornton, Marleau, Cheechoo and Roenick will continue to shine, and Clowe will continue to surprise us all. Sharks in 6

Game 7s Tonights

Tonight, we have the finales to two of the best playoff series in the first round. Calgary/San Jose has been epic, I have been addicted to this series like no other. From Curtis Joseph's tremendous, series saving effort, to Joe Thornton's last second goal to lift the Sharks ahead, this series has had it all. Tonight will be a hard faught battle. Sharks will take it, I'm guessing 4-2.

Philly/Washington has also been great, with Washington and some guy named Ovechkin making an incredible come back in the series. I picked Philly to win this series, but I just don't think they can stop the A-Train tonight. The Caps are on a roll, 5-2 victory for them.

Is a Gimmick Really Necessay?

I know I blogged like an hour ago, probably not even, but I need to get this out. I just watched (for the second time in two days) a segment involving Eklund's dog. Never have I been more ashamed to be a hockey blogger.

Maggie the monkey was fun. I mean who doesn't love watching a cute little monkey from the bowmanville zoo (not too far from my childhood hometown of Newcastle) spin a wheel.

But a dog picking a coloured ball? Yesterday, Bert the dog picked the St. Louis blues to win the draft lottery. We all knew Tampa was winning the draft lottery, how could the league pass up a chance to put another ownership-issued on another southern team? (PS Tomorrow I blog about how the draft lottery needs to be changed).

Today, Bert predicted the playoff winners. I didnt watch the whole thing, but I believe Bert picked San Jose, Nashville, NJ and Anaheim...who knows, who cares who else the dog picked.

TSN is a national network. They have millions of viewers, and some of the best hockey reporters on the planet. They can take a chance by putting a monkey on their program. Eklund is a hockey blogger, and most people don't even care about his opinion. People don't go to Eklund to see who's going to win games, series, or championships. They go to see who will be traded. His opinion isn't important, so why should we care about his dog? How smart can the dog be, half of the time he rolled both balls back. Sorry pooch, both teams can't win.

I have two dogs. I'm going to get a bunch of dog biscuits, marker some names on them, and whatever one my dog eats, will win the series...no thanks. I think half of the problem with Eklund's segments is his voice...it really is annoying.


On to some website news:

first, I am proud to announce that the third annual PPFL has been won by someone other than Bob Adamski (Who won the two previous editions). I finally took home the top prize, with Blueleafs coming in at a close second. I will give Blueleafs the trade of the year award, however, as he switched Crosby for Malkin the day Crosby went down. This almost helped Blueleafs win the 2007-2008 title. 2008-2009 PPFL info will come out sometime in July this year.

Still no software to update the website, but I'm working on it. All info will continue to be in the blog until I can get things sorted out. This new laptop runs great, however, and should make updating this place even easier.

third, I really want to upgrade hockeyleaks and make it great for this summers free agency. Please email me at cjohnson202@hockeyleaks.com and give me all the feedback you possibly can. How The West Was Won

I know i promised these to go up on Tuesday, not Wednesday at 1:06 am, but I decided to take in a Jays game tonight. Toonie Tuesday is always a huge success, and something I love to attend several times a year. I have to admit, I watched more fan fights and arrests tonight than I did baseball, gotta love this great city of Toronto. I already have the next one (first week in May) circled on my calender.

Here are my selections for the first round of the west

(1) Detroit vs (8) Nashville

Nashville worked their asses off to get to the dance, a place nobody could have predicted to start the season. Gone were all of their top players, replaced with guys with little to no experience. Mason and Ellis have been brilliant at times this year, and they are rolling at the perfect time. Detroit has questions in net, and has been spending too much time as of late in the doctors office. I think Detroit has the talent to pull this off, but it's not going to be easy.

(2) San Jose vs. (7) Calgary

Best goaltending match up in the playoffs, bar none. The Sharks need to get CheeChoo and Marleau going, as Thornton isn't going to be able to carry this team himself. Calgary has struggled at times this season, while the Sharks have been the best team in the NHL since about November. It's hard to not like the Sharks in this one.

(3) Minnesota vs. (6) Colorado

Minnesota is favoured by a lot of people, but not me. Several reasons. If Stastny and Sakic were healthy for a full 82 games, this division would have been Colorado's weeks ago. Another big reason: Jose Theodore is a UFA July 1st, and is fighting for a job. I expect Theodore to shine. Gaborik, Rolston, Koivu and Demitra...or Sakic, Stastny, Forsberg and Hejduk. Minnesota may have the edge in goal, but Colorado is too strong, and are much better on defense.

(4) Anaheim vs. (5) Dallas

I read somewhere that Dallas may be the worst team ever to get 97 points. While Dallas isn't terrible, they are no Anaheim. Pronger's health is in question, but even without him the Ducks easily take this series. Turco has had one good playoff round in his career (and he still lost) and Dallas' defense is too suspect. A team led by Mike Ribeiro isn't going anywhere past the first round.

I'm Back! Round One, Lets Go!

I apologize for the lack of site updates! The main page is still a few days away from being updated, as I've invested in a new laptop, and it's currently lacking the software I need to upload/update. Hockeyleaks.com is here, however, to help you win your playoff pools. Last year, through the first two rounds of the playoffs, Hockeyleaks.com went a very impressive 11-1. Lets go for 12-0! We'll start with the Eastern Conference preview, tomorrow we'll cover the west.

(1) Montreal vs. (8) Boston

Statistics don't lie, and that's not good news for Boston. Montreal went 8-0 against the Bruins during the regular season, and outplayed them in all eight games. For Montreal to even think about losing this game, Carey Price has to show that he is a rookie, something he's yet to do. Tim Thomas will steal one of the games, but it won't be enough to get Boston out of the first round.

(2) Pittsburgh vs. (7) Ottawa

No team has slid further down the standings like the Sens have. Their recent struggles, combined with their recent injuries, and there is little chance the Sens can escape the first round. The Penguins are very young, and lack the playoff experience the Sens have, but even so, Ottawa has too many questions, and not enough answers. The Penguins will need good goaltending, but that has shockingly not been a surprise in the second half of the season.

(3) Washington vs. (6) Philadelphia

This is my favourite series in the East by far. Washington won the trade deadline, and are now sitting with home ice in the playoffs. The Flyers battled hard the last month to keep their spot, and now we have what should be the most exciting eastern playoff series in the first round. Ovechkin is going to win the Hart, and his production shouldn't slow down now that he's made the big dance for the first time in his career. With that said, the Flyers are a better all around team, and should be able to hold off the surging caps. This one could go either way, but I like Philly's chances.

(4) New Jersey vs. (5) NYR

The Devils will go into this as the favourite for two reasons: home ice, and martin brodeur. I am taking the Rangers for one reason: Scott Gomez. This guy has something to prove, leaving New Jersey after having so much success there. He wants to show that he made the right decision, and will be playing his heart out to make sure the Rangers get by the Devils. Lundqvist isn't bad himself, don't forget.

The Sundin fallout is bigger than I ever expected.

Fletcher is shopping the hell out of McCabe, hoping to get as big as a return as he can. With Sundin staying, guys like Antropov, Ponikarovsky, Stajan, etc are more in play than ever. Fletcher still will be one of the busiest GMs come Tuesday.

I'd be shocked if both Jokinen and Richards were not dealt. Richards to Anaheim is very possible, though Anaheim would have to dump considerable salary somewhere for that to happen. Montreal and Minnesota lead Jokinen.

Rumours continue to circulate that Forsberg is coming back to Philly today or tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it...

Bruins have considerable interest in the human band-aid (aka Havlat)

Predictions Time...Chat Tonight

First of all, chat tonight at 9 PM EST. It will be the final chat before Tuesday, as I am out most of monday unfortunatly. I will update the site in the next half hour, so for all the latest rumours check the rumour mill within that time span. Hockeyleaks.com's trade deadline coverage will start at 8 am on Monday, in the chat, on the forums, and full site updates. Make sure to be here!

Here are my predictions on where I think people will go. These come from a mix of things I've heard, as well as some personal opinion and knowledge. I'll probably get them all wrong, as so much will change from here until Tuesday. If one team misses out on a player, everything changes, meaning there is really no way of knowing who will go where until it happens. With that said, here is how I think things would go down at this very second.

A lot of people are unsure, but I am pretty confident he wil waive his NTC and go somewhere else to better the teams future. Then again, I'm a Leaf fan and thats what I want, so we'll see what happens.

Sundin, McCabe Skip Practice

The team is blaming the flu, but it should be worth noting that reports have McCabe only leaving practice after meeting with Cliff Fletcher...something to keep an eye on.

Sundin apparently has given Fletcher a list of teams he'd be interested in playing for. Rumoured list is Anaheim, Detroit, Montreal, San Jose, and Vancouver. Some sources also include Calgary and Ottawa. Apparently Detroit has really stepped up their efforts in the last 24 hours.

The Sharks are really going after Brian Campbell. Matt Carle would likely be part of any deal San Jose makes, whether it be for a forward or defenseman.

The Flyers have claimed Thoreson on waivers...They are VERY in the Brad Richards sweepstakes, as are Calgary (if they can dump Tanguay) and Columbus. More teams will get in this after the Sundin situation is cleared up.

Rumours are swirling that Ottawa is working on a deal that would bring in Khabibulin. Thats definitely something to watch.

5 Days...

First of all, our good friend Eklund (not to be mistaken with Peklund) is reporting a possible deal between Boston and Atlanta. Boston would send Kessel, Shaeffer, a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick...I say no way. That package is enormous, and if Boston does it, they are crazy. Eklund also says Hossa could re-up for 5 years...still a bad deal by the bruins, as they are a fringe team and I don't understand why they would give up so much future for 8th place...

A montreal media outlet is saying the Habs have ordered equiptment for Hossa. This wouldn't be the first time the Habs jumped the gun and ordered equiptment for a player that never showed up. A few years ago they ordered equiptment for Khabibulin, when he was almost traded for Theodore. Habs are said to be offering Ryder and Streit, as well as a pick.

An online report suggests that Brian Burke has offered Ryan, Mikkelson and Edmonton's first round pick for Sundin, Stajan, and a 2nd round pick in 09. Fair deal for both teams, though you never know what you can believe. The deal apparently was started by XM radio. Sundin and McCabe were not at practice this morning, though it was optional.

Rangers could be close to getting Rucinsky back. I'm hearing they've offered Malik and a pick for Rucinsky and one of Salvador/Jackman. No idea what round pick we're talking, would have to be at least a second.

Here Come The Flyers

First, the Red Wings have put Matt Ellis on waivers....

But the big news: Simon Gagner is out of the rest of the season. This is huge news, and the Flyers must replace him. Early indications are that the Flyers are prepared to jump into the Sundin and Hossa races. Tanguay and Nagy are also on the Flyers' radar.

The Flyers were throwing around Jeff Carter's name a lot this week in Naples, and I would expect we will only hear his name more now that Gagner is out. Philly joins an already large group (Detroit, Anaheim, San Jose, Calgary, Vancouver, Boston, Montreal, Dallas, and Minnesota) who are looking to add a big offensive forward. While many GMs are saying the offers are not where they want them to be just yet, you can expect them to increase to much higher levels before we get to Tuesday...

Wednesday Rumours

Ok, so Hossa isn't a Red Wing...yet. The Wings are not front-runners for him either, that title belongs to San Jose, who are offering Patrick Marleau and a first for him. Marleau would look good beside Kovalchuk in my opinion. Boston is said to be offering a package involving Glen Murray, maybe Kessel. Detroit's package has to include one of their three young guys (Filppula, Hudler and Franzen). Ottawa is very much still after Hossa, as is Montreal.

The Tomas Kaberle deal the other day did involve Jeff Carter, I can confirm that. Fletcher is very high on Carter and still has hopes of bringing him in before Tuesday. In no way do I believe Sundin will end up in Montreal. Anaheim and Philly would be my two best guesses at this point. Stajan or Steen will likely be packaged with Sundin, while Antropov is always a possibility. I've been told if Raycroft can't be dealt / packaged by the deadline he will be waived...

Brad Stuart has rejected the Kings latest offer and is likely to be dealt. Still hearing Detroit leads, watch Boston as well.

Brian Campbell is going to be traded unless things change drastically. San Jose and Colorado are your teams to watch there.

Brad Richards is a name I'm hearing a lot today. Chicago would love to get this guy, as would Nashville. Colorado, San Jose and Phoenix are also among those interested. In no way does Richards stay in the East if dealt I've been told.

Tanguay to Montreal is being talked about a lot, but I'm hearing Tanguay will not waive his NTC to Montreal. Things could change, but right now I dont think it's likely at all. Tanguay to Boston or Florida makes a lot more sense.

Calgary is very interested in Barrett Jackman, as well as Dan Boyle.

Sorry about this being so late, I got stuck at my real job very late tonight (1:30 am to be exact). Back to my favourite job...

Kaberle was almost a Flyer this afternoon. I've been told Coburn, a pick and a player from the current roster would be coming in return. Kaberle is refusing to waive his NTC, it will be interesting to see how this situation unfolds. I'm hearing Kubina and McCabe are being shopped more than ever because of this.

Is Lecavalier available? All sides are denying it, but I've heard he is very much available for the right price. If he is available, Montreal, Philly, Dallas and Calgary are the teams I'm hearing right now. How about Vinny to Toronto?

Speaking of Tampa, Chicago is really trying to land Brad Richards.

Forsberg not returning has the price of Sundin and Hossa going up. Anaheim leads Sundin, Detroit and Philly right behind, while you can't count out Calgary and Vancouver. Dallas leads the Hossa race, Detroit is very much in that as well. Montreal is also starting to creep back into it.


There was a rumour that the Rangers were close to aquiring Liles today. Talks will continue tomorrow...

Overall, I think we may see a deal by Wednesday. I'm hearing talks are very active at these GM meetings...

Bochenski On Waivers...Dominos?

The Ducks have placed Bochenski on waivers. I don't understand why this kid is thrown around so much. Leafs have to pick this kid up, he's going to be a star one day. As a Leaf fan, I want him.

Ducks making cap room? Sundin? Hossa? The Ducks are up to something, stay tuned...

Team To Watch: San Jose Sharks

With the deadline just nine days away, and the GMs meetings starting tomorrow, the team I am most interested in watching (other than the Leafs) is the San Jose Sharks. No contender has more cap room to spend than the sharks, who have between 10 and 12 million dollars in cap space.

The Sharks most pressing need is an offensive defenseman. They want a guy who can lead their powerplay and a guy with a decent shot from the point. There are several guys available who can provide this.

Bryan McCabe is one guy the Sharks are looking at. He has a big shot, and has been a key part of the Toronto powerplay for years. His contract is quite large, but the Sharks are one of the few teams in the league who can afford it. With that said, McCabe has a NTC and is unlikely to waive it for San Jose.

Tomas Kaberle, the other big Leaf defenseman, is also on the Sharks radar. He's cheap at just over 4 million per, and has a few years left on his contract, meaning he will make the Sharks better in the long term as well as now. Kaberle is unlikely to waive his NTC either, and I'm not totally sold that the Leafs want to move him anyways. The sharks would need to put together one hell of a package to lure the Czech to California.

Dan Boyle is available, and the Sharks are keeping a close eye on him. He's been overshadowed by the big three in Tampa for years, but the Sharks feel he would improve their club greatly. Boyle has had two big injuries this year which is scaring some teams away, but not the Sharks. If Boyle is to be dealt, the sharks will be right there.

Brian Campbell is iffy, as the Sabres continue to try and sign him. If Campbell is dealt, the Sharks will be all over him. In fact, I've heard they are very interested in bringing him in, and locking him up long term.

Finally, Rob Blake. The veteran D-man would fit in great with the Sharks, however, rumour has the Sharks not interested in trading prospects to a division rival. I don't see the Sharks getting Blake...

Up front, the Sharks would like to add a little bit more offense. Mats Sundin has been mentioned a lot, as has Marian Hossa. Overall, the Sharks main target is an offensive defenseman, but if they can improve their scoring up front, they wont be afraid to make that deal.

Patrick Marleau could be on his way out if the Sharks can find a replacement (Hossa, Sundin). His large contract and offensive struggles, however, will make him a tough sell. The Sharks are unlikely to deal Logan Couture, who is their top ranked prospect. They made sure last draft that they got him, it's unlikely they will make him part of any deal. Prospects Setoguchi and Petrecki are being shopped around, as is current Shark Matt Carle. Ty Wishart is another prospect who a lot of teams have interest in, though the Sharks are in no hurry to deal him.

Overall, I expect the Sharks to be very active in the trading market. They have a lot of young players and prospects to deal, and a lot of cap room to work with. The Sharks should look a lot more dangerous after 3 pm on February 26th.

Tomorrow's Team: Montreal Canadiens

Team To Watch: Calgary Flames

For the last several years, the Flames have gone into the deadline looking to add a quality centre to support wingers Iginla and Tanguay. Guys like Langkow and Lombardi have been tested in the centre position, but have never done the job the organization has desperatly hoped for. This year is likely the year the centre position is finally addressed.

It's also worth noting that the Flames have 44 million commited to just 12 players for next season. Iginla, Kiprusoff, Regehr and Phaneuf all begin new contracts next year, which means cap room for 08-09 will be tight.

Peter Forsberg was target number one, however, recently it was announced that he has no interest in playing for the Calgary Flames.

Target #2 is said to be Mats Sundin. He has no contract beyond next year, which is a good thing for the cap concerned Flames. Sundin is a great playmaker, and would instantly make Iginla a better player. Sundin would make Calgary a better offensive team, something the Flames really need to achieve.

Targer #3 is Olli Jokinen, though he's also the most unlikely. He's signed long term and for quite a bit, something the Flames are looking to avoid. Jokinen's long term contract also mean he'd be quite expensive. Jokinen is not-likely to Calgary.

Alex Tanguay is set to make over five million next season, making him a prime candidate to be dealt by the deadline. Montreal has been heavily mentioned, however, reports have Tanguay not interested in waiving his NTC for the Habs. The Senators are said to have interest, as are Pittsburgh, Buffalo and New Jersey. I'd say the chances of Tanguay being dealt are good, though many believe the Flames could wait until the draft or offseason.

Darcy Tucker and Michael Ryder are two guys who could be brought in to replace Tanguay.

The Flames always seem to pick up a defensemen near the deadline, and this year shouldn't be any different. The Flames are looking to improve their back-end, and have several options. One source has them interest in Brad Stuart once again, while Dan Boyle out of Tampa is another player they are considered. Others the Flames have interest in include Brian Campbell, Bryce Salvador and Barrett Jackman.

With Calgary's cap problems, they will be relying on a lot of young talent next year. They will try to avoid dealing too much of it this upcoming deadline. Dustin Boyd is said to be very available, while Mikael Backlund is not. Toronto has interest in both, and are pushing hard to get Backlund, though its unlikely. Leland Irving could be dealt to a team seeking a strong goaltending prospect, while Lombardi is also a possibility to be dealt.

In the end, expect the Flames to make 2-4 deals before the Feb. 26 deadline. A center is a must, while they would love to get add some grit up front as well. If they can dump some future contract (see Tanguay), they will. I expect another d-man to be brought in to solidify one of the strongest back ends in the league.

Team To Watch: Detroit Red Wings

Note: first I apologize, the Stars DO NOT have a first round pick this year, they traded it to LA last year.

The Detroit Red Wings go into the deadline as the league's best team. They are set in goal with Hasek and Osgood, not to mention their future star in Jimmy Howard. Even as the league's best team, the wings are expected to be major buyers at the deadline.

We start on the blueline, where Detroit is all but sure to improve by Feb. 26. Brad Stuart is most likely to end up in Motown, while other big names such as Rob Blake (not likely as he doesn't want to go East) and Dan Boyle are also very high on Detroit's list.

Up front, the Red Wings would love to add one more offensive piece to their puzzle. Mats Sundin is one name that has been mentioned, while Tucker and Antropov are two other Leafs the Wings are said to have interest in. Marian Hossa would look good in Red, while Tampa's Prospal and NYI's Satan are other possible Red Wing by Feb. 26.

A guy like Sundin or Hossa will be expensive. Most believe Hudler, Filppula or Franzen will be involved in any big deal the wings make. Kindl is another prospect a lot of teams are asking about. For a guy like Prospal or Tucker, reports have Detroit offering prosects Quincy and Abdelkader.

Detroit is expected to add one forward and one d-man by the deadline, and all signs point to them doing at least that. The Wings are poised to lift the cup this spring, and feel they need to make a few moves to get there.

Team To Watch: Dallas Stars

I'm going to be doing a series of these, with a new team each day.

Today we look at the Dallas Stars, who continue their search for a scoring winger to play with Modano. This search has been ongoing for years with very little success.

In the offseason the Stars tried very hard for Jason Blake and Slava Kozlov, only to lose out on both. The Stars hoped to get their winger last deadline in Nagy, but that didn't work out. All signs point to the Stars once again bringing in a winger in hopes of bolstering their offense.

So who are they looking at. Marian Hossa is target number one. If Hossa is dealt, expect Dallas to be right in the thick of talks. Hossa would look great beside Modano.

Target number two is Martin St. Louis. Tampa seems content to keep their big three, but if one is to be dealt, sources say St. Louis would be that guy. Dallas would love to bring St. Louis in, as he still has term left on his contract, meaning he'd be more than just a rental.

Who else are the Stars looking at. Prospal is another Tampa player the Stars have serious interest in, and it looks increasingly possible the skiled winger will be traded. What is interesting about Prospal is that he only seems to have success with the Bolts. He left a few seasons ago, struggled, only to return to Tampa and re-find this game. With that said, Prospal would be a good fit for the Stars.

Michael Ryder is having a really tough year, but could thrive in Dallas. He is a UFA July 1st, meaning there is very little risk in bringing him in. If he works out, great, if he doesnt', he's gone in a few months.

Darcy Tucker is another name that Dallas has interest in. He can score, and he provides grit, two things the Stars could really use. Tucker, however, has a NTC and is unlikely to waive it to go to Dallas. Three years at 3 million per left on his deal.

Miroslav Satan is another soon to be UFA that Dallas has significant interest in. While he just got hurt, he should be back around the deadline, just in time to get back into game shape heading into the playoffs. The Islanders are out of it, and will likely be moving him. I know the Stars had interest in Satan last time he was a UFA, I expect them to make a serious bid for him this deadline.


None of the above players will come cheap. Dallas still has their first round pick for this season, so it appears that will come into play. Dallas has a stockpile of defensive prospects including Niskanen and Fistric that could also come to play if the right player was available. Finally, Marty Turco's name will come into play anytime you talk about Tampa Bay. St. Louis would be expensive, but Turco for St. Louis has been a rumour for months now, and many around the league believe there is a lot to it.

So keep your eye on the Dallas Stars, as they are deep in the hunt for a sniper to be along side Mike Modano.

Slow Day....

Very little to discuss, not much going on anywhere....at least we have something to look forward to. It's been a long time sine I've been this excited for a trade deadline, I am sure this will be a deadline to really remember. I remember last year's and how slow it was, I doubt that will happen again this year. A lot of teams are competing, and I think we are in store for some great deals this time around.

Hossa for Marleau is something I've been hearing a lot about. The Thrashers would finally get the centre they've been searching for since they lost Savard, while San Jose would get that secondary scoring that they really need. San Jose is also searching for a d-man. Boyle, Kaberle, Kubina and Blake are all on their radar. They already struck out in their attempt to land Redden.

I noticed Eklund had Huselius to Toronto for Sundin today...why the Leafs would have any interest in the pending UFA I have no idea. If I'm Huselius, there is no way I sign long-term with the Leafs, therefore, this deal isn't happening. Sundin to Calgary is still possible, but it's going to be for prospects and picks if it happens, not one of Calgarys better roster players...

Habs and Yanic Perrault could be pairing up very soon. I'm hearing a deal could be close. This would be about the 20th deal these teams have made over the past couple of seasons...

What better way to spend trade deadline day by watching JFJ watch his team get dismantled by somebody else...should be exciting...the only other better way to spend Deadline Day is in the hockeyleaks chat room, which is back!

Forsberg is down to Philly and Colorado as far as I know.

Toronto has serious interest in Matt Carle from San Jose. Rumours suggest the Sharks are trying really hard to pry Kaberle from the Blue and White. Rumours going around Toronto are suggesting that Fletcher honestly believes he can trade off several contracts, and still make the playoffs. This is always a fun time of year in Toronto.

The Ball Is Rolling + So Many Rumours

What a steal by Ottawa today. Commodore and Stillman are on their way to the Senators for Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves. The Sens get a very talented forward and a very physical defenseman (two things they really need) for an under-achieving forward and a defenseman who is getting paid too much. Stillman will give the Sens much needed secondary scoring. As for the Canes, it's har to say whether they've realized that they need to become sellers. They've been searching for a puck-moving d-man all season and they have one in Corvo, but wow did they spend for him, both money and trade wise. Maybe Eaves will re-find his game in Carolina, but I just don't see it.

Now, after a weekend away, I have lots to talk about...

So whats next? I remember last year I was in my car on my way to Toronto (same thing I was doing when this trade broke) when Forsberg was dealt to Nashville. It was a deal nobody expected, a lot like this one. That was the official start to the deadline, just like today is.

I've heard Sundin has waived his NTC for Detroit and Anaheim only. I find it hard to believe Vancouver is off that list, but then again, the Canucks are not in the playoffs currently, and Sundin wants to win. Why wouldn't Mats want to play in Calgary? He loves Canada, and who wouldn't want to play with Iginla, Phaneuf and Kiprusoff? If I'm Fletcher I talk Mats into going to the Flames, thats where all the good prospects are...

Darcy Tucker to Detroit rumours really heated up over the weekend. I've heard Tucker will only go to Montral or Detroit, as he wants to stay close to home. Doubt Otttawa is on his list...

Speaking of Detroit, them getting Brad Stuart seems VERY likely. I spoke to a source this morning who told me he'd be shocked if this deal didn't happen.

Rob Blake is not going to Detroit, or the East for that matter. No, apparently he wants to stay on the west coast. San Jose really wants him, but doesn't want to give up their prospects to get him, as they are afraid of them coming back to haunt them in that pacific division. Colorado and Minnesota are my two guesses right now. Look for San Jose to push for Dan Boyle.

Montreal has significant interest in Nagy, as does Pittsburgh. Speaking of the Habs, Ryder to Dallas is still VERY hot.

The New Jersey Devils are talking to Tampa Bay about Prospal. They also have interest in Dan Boyle.

The Islanders are getting a lot of calls about Mike Comrie. I heard Edmonton would like him back yesterday, while Detroit, Dallas and Phoenix are said to have made calls to the Islanders about him.

Finally, Colorado has a lot of interest in Wade Belak...Leafs would love to bring in one of Liles or Svatos...something to keep an eye on...

20 Days - It Starts Today

Ok, two MAJOR things have happened today that should get the ball rolling.

First, Forsberg has told several teams that he will not be playing for them this year. These teams include a few biggies, including Detroit, San Jose and Calgary. These teams now turn their attention to Mats Sundin.

Second, Calgary has signed Phaneuf to a six year extension worth 6.5 per. The Flames are going to be in serious cap trouble next season.

So, what makes sense for the flames? Tanguay has to be moved, as his salary is just too much for them to handle this year. The Flames can afford to bring in 2-3 soon-to-UFAs, and they likely will, but look for the Flames to increase their willingness to deal Tanguay. Ottawa could be a possible destination.

So what about Sundin? I think Detroit is in the lead for him, as they have the prospects and picks to bring him in. Sundin would love to play with Lidstrom and Zetterberg, and Detroit, right now, has the best shot at winning the cup this year. Vancouver right now wants Forsberg, and until they are told he isn't interested, that is where their attention will be. Detroit and Calgary are the two teams with the best shot at Sundin right now, Vancouver is a little behind. I've been told Sundin has no interest in going to San Jose.

LA has called up Cloutier (re-entry waivers) and sent down Aubin. Interesting move, both should easily clear waivers. I am still hearing LA and Ottawa are talking goalie trade. LA is a perfect partner for Ottawa, I really would be shocked if the two didnt complete some sort of deal.

The Leafs have placed Andy Wozneiwski on waivers, harldy the move Toronto fans were hoping for. This will pave the way for McCabe to return tomorrow night. I've been asked why Raycroft still hasn't been waived, and the answer is that Cliff is hopefull he can package him with a Sundin, Antropov, etc. to get him out of the organization and off the payroll completely.

Cap Report + Waiver Action

Jeff Hamilton has been placed on waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes. $800,000 for a guy who put up 39 points last season, and still only 30, I have to think someone picks him up...

Maxim Kondratiev is on waivers as well, you may remember him as being a large part of the Brian Leetch to Toronto trade.

As I looked over Cap numbers this morning, I was shocked to see how well prepared some teams are for the trade deadline.

First of all, I was looking at cap numbers because of our good friend Eklund, who has posted a rumour of the Leafs shipping Raycroft, Antropov and McCabe to a Western Team. This coming on the same day where I was tipped off that San Jose has great interest in McCabe. I check the numbers, and am shocked to learn the Sharks have over 10 million in available cap room. Antropov would fit in great with the Sharks, while McCabe would be the big shot from the point San Jose has been looking at for years (you will remember last year how much they pursued Souray). As for Raycroft, he would add a little insurance in case Iron Man Evgeni went down.

Looking at the top ten in each conference, I found a few other teams very well prepared for the upcoming trade season.

Detroit - Over five million dollars available to go out and get a top line forward and a top four defenseman, which is the two things they are looking for. That shouldnt be hard to do, when you figure one of Franzen or Filpula will be part of the forward deal, each earning almost a million dollars per.

Columbus - Not sure if they are going to make a push for the playoffs, but if they decide to upgrade their roster, they will have 10 million to spend. They may also get even more cap space if Federov or Foote are traded like some rumours are speculating.

Colorado - I was surprised to see that they had four million to still spend, and they may very well spend it if they think they can go out and get someone that will give them that extra push. This team didnt spend large on Hannon and Smyth to not make the playoffs...Ray Emery is one name I'm hearing loudly this morning.

Minnesota - They also have four million to spend, and they will spend it. Their division is the tighest in hockey, and they have every intention of winning it. Look for them to add some more offense as the deadline approaches.

Phoenix - The currently hold the 8th and final spot in the west, and are very dangerous with 12 million to spend. They'd like to add both a top defenseman and a top forward, but are not willing to give up too much to do so. Toronto fans, this is another team where salaries could possibly be dumped. I'm hearing Kubina is very high on Phoenix's list of available d-men.

Rounding out the west, Calgary, Vancouver and Dallas all have between 2.5 - 4 million to spend, and I'd be shocked if all three didnt make a significant move between now and Feb 26th...Finally in the West, Nashville has 16 million to spend, and if they feel they can make a move to help them make the playoffs this season, they wont be afraid to pull the trigger

Atlanta - Despite having big stars like Kovalchuk, Hossa and Kozlov, the Thrashers have almost seven million to spend! I see Atlanta going out and spending to make their team better, improving all three positions. They will look to add depth at forward and in goal, while a top defenseman is something the Thrashers really feel they need to get to the next level.

Boston - With between 4 and 5 million to spend, Boston will also be looking to make some moves to make sure they don't lose their spot in the post-season (currently seventh). The team will likely focus on their offense, and add one or two solid forwards between now and the deadline.

Buffalo - With almost six million to spend, the Sabres will be lookig to improve their club. Don't look for a quick fix, however, as Buffalo will be looking for players that still have several years remaining on their contracts. Jokinen is one player they want badly.

Carolina - Four million to spend, and they are likely to spend it. They really want to improve their blueline, and I'd be shocked if they didnt get a blueliner from LA. Stuart or Preissing, if not both.

Florida - 5 million to spend, talk around the league is very mixed when it comes to the Panthers. Martin is close to losing his job, and many believe that if he's still around by the deadlie, he will wheel and deal and do his best to save his job by making the playoffs. They need help up front, though with all these Jokinen rumours it's hard to really tell what direction the Panthers will go in.

Montreal - One of the hottest teams in hockey, and they still have over four million to spend. They are searching for a top centre, and have been for as long as I can remember. Jokinen is one player they'd love to have, while Federov is another name that won't go away.

New Jersey - With just over three million to spend, I look for them to improve their offense. With that said, I don't expect New Jersey to give up much youth at all, and I feel New Jersey will have a quiet trade season...

NYI - The Islanders are very interesting, as they have over seven million to spend. Currently sitting 8th, I don't expect them to make any short team fix deals, only deals that help them now and longterm. The Islanders don't want to make the same mistake they made last season (ie Smyth).

NYR - The Rangers have 2.5 to spend, and they'll spend every penny. Defense is likely where they will focus. Rob Blake to NYR is still very hot.

Ottawa - At three million to spend, the Sens badly need offensive depth. With that said, rumours of Redden and Emery being moved won't go away. The Sens could be one of the most interesting deadline teams, something we're not used to seeing (ie Tyler Arnason)

Philly - They have no cap space, so any move would have to be done very creatively.

Pittsburgh - As far as cap room in the east goes for contenders, look no further than the Pittsburgh Penguins. 10 million to spend, and you'd have to think they won't be afraid to spend it. The Penguins are playing great hockey, and have to be serious contenders at this point. Look for them to add some defense prior to the deadline, as well as a little more offensive depth.

Washington - If the Caps can ever climb into the third spot in the East, they could be very dangerous. With 14 million to spend, if Washington finds themselves securely in the playoffs by the 26th of the February, they could become very active on buying market. They told Ovechkin they'd start spending when they signed him to his 13 year deal, nobody expected it to be this soon, however.

With 27 days left before the deadline, the action could start anytime. For teams like Toronto, Philly, and Anaheim, the time is now to start making moves, and freeing up cap room for the stretch run.

Less Than A Month

The Deadline is FAST approaching, how exciting is that! The NHL is the greatest league in the world, and the trade deadline is one of my favourite days of the year. Christmas, New Years, even my birthday are not always exciting as NHL Trade Deadline day. I love hosting deadline here, I always gather a few friends around me, and we work our butts off to bring you the best coverage on the internet. This is our third year, and for those who have been with us from the beginning i can promise you this will be our best year yet. Our tracker is always the fastest, while our chat room (which will be returning soon) is always a great place to be!

Fletcher is ready to start analyzing his team, and things could start to happen this week. As I said in the mail bag (hockeyleaks.com's newest feature, check it out), I believe Raycroft will be the first to go. After him, it's anyones guess.

This week will be large, as not only is Sundin meeting with the Leafs about a move, but Buffalo will be talking to Campbell, and Atlanta will be talking to Hossa. This is the first real week of the deadline, as teams will have to start thinking and making decisions.

Personally, I am very excited about this weekends all-star festivities. For the first time ever, we will see the shootout competition, which I am absolutely excited for. Basketball fans know how much fun the Slam Dunk Competition is to watch, and the NHL's version of it should do much better and be much more exciting.

Jokinen Trade Watch : Year Three

As Hockeyleaks heads into our third deadline, Olli Jokinen will once again be on our trade watch. Every year I've heard strong rumours of the Fin being traded, and this year is no different.

I heard Buffalo had a strong interest last week, though Floria's asking price was too high for the Sabres at this point. Enter Minnesota, who apparently is more than willing to pay the price. These are the first two teams to show serious interest in the forward, but they won't be the last two. If Jokinen is in fact on the market, up to ten teams will have serious interest in him. He's attractive because he's not just a rental, but a player you can build around for the next several years. A team like Phoenix or Nashville would love to get this guy.

I've been told that Cliff Fletcher is going to use the home and home with Washington as a real judging factor. He'll then sit back over the all-star break, and could start making moves as of next week. I know he said two weeks, but do not be surprised if he starts swinging deals earlier. I think we're all expecting to see Raycroft hit waivers at one point or the other...though with that said, I've heard that the Leafs may package him with another player to get him out of the organization and out of their hands.

So far, so good for Forsberg. Philly still leads the way, with Colorado and Detroit still very in this.

Catching Up On Today's Big Stories

I'll save the Leafs till last...

We'll start in Pittsburgh where we learned Crosby will miss the next 6-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain. This is a huge blow to the Penguins, who are still right in the mix for fighting for their playoff lives. Penguins management will surely be looking to swing a deal to help their depth going forward.

Staying with the Penguins, Malkin is off to the all-star game, replacing the injured Crosby. I think Malkin is a good choice, as he's playing the best hockey of his young career right now.

In Phoenix, Ilya Bryzgalov signed a three year, 12.75 million dollar extension. Phoenix has secured their most important piece right now, and will be a good team for at least the next four seasons.

How about Niklas Backstrom, my choice right now for rookie of the year. Kane got off to a great start, but has really slowed down in 2008. Backstrom is on absolute fire, and doesn't show signs of slowing down anytime soon. Ovechkin, Semin and Backstrom are going to make Washington very strong for many years.

Finally, John Ferguson Jr. was fired as the GM of the Maple Leafs today. Cliff Fletcher will finish the season as GM, and will be replaced in the offseason by an experienced hockey guy, my guess being Jim Rutherford. Paul Maurice will remain coach of the Leafs for the remainder of the season, and will be assessed by the next General Manager, who is likely to bring in his own coach (or if it's Rutherford, Maurice could be his choice).

Fletchers job will be to come in and attempt to clean up the mess left by John Ferguson Jr. Early impressions are varied. Some believe the only move Fletcher will make will be the one involving Sundin that most of us in the industry believe is coming. I, on the other hand, feel that Fletcher is ready to make several moves, freeing up roster space and salary cap room for the man who replaces him. Kubina, Tucker, Sundin, Raycroft, Blake, Ponikarovsky, and more are available and will be moved if they can be. Antropov and Kaberle are left off that list for the reason that I believe they are important pieces for the Leafs moving forward. I believe the Leafs will do what the Flyers did last year, and that is sell off for prospects and picks, and use the summer to add neccessary pieces to build a contender. Stock up on young players, bring Sundin back, and sign two or three good players and the Leafs are now a solid contender who have tons of potential as well as potential to grow. The Leafs have players like Kaberle, Toskala and Steen already in place, it's time to get even younger in Toronto.

Confirmed: Ferguson Fired

I can confirm the Cliff Fletcher will be taking over as the Maple Leafs interm GM as of today. Sources say Paul Maurice will remain as coach for the time being. Reports have a press conference being held at 1 pm.

I will report on the PC as well as add my thoughts later today. With all this action, site updates will be delayed until mid-day.

Toronto, Today Is The Day

The board met yesterday, the decision comes today.

While nothing is for certain, all signs point to John Ferguson Jr. being fired today.

I'm hearing Cliff Fletcher comes in a role which would allow him to hire the next GM, and would give him total power to make trades/roster moves, something JFJ never had...

These Are Crazy Times

There are crazy rumours flying around right now.

First, the Ottawa Sun reports that Dallas could deal Marty Turco to Tampa for Martin St. Louis. This is very interesting, as Mike Smith has played very well for Dallas this season, while St. Louis is really starting to pick up. Tampa Bay is already looking at next season, and they know that they need a goalie to compete.

JFJ is still said to be gone by the end of the week, with Cliff Fletcher likely to replace him. Sundin apparently wants to go to Vancouver if he had his choice, however, the Leafs asking price would likely include Edler, a player Vancouver does not want to give up. Look for Kesler to be part of the that deal. Calgary and Anaheim are two teams also strongly interested in Mats.

The Tanguay for Ryder rumours are still very strong, and Ive heard from several sources that both are expected to be moved by the deadline. It's interesting that these two teams are looking to trade two of their biggest stars despite the success both teams are having.

The Kings are shopping Blake, Modry, Stuart and Nagy. We all know how much defenseman are worth in the NHL, meaning the Kings are in great position. The Kings are one of the best teams in the NHL five years from now.

And finally, I'm getting a little sick of the way a division winner gets automatic top three. Currently we have Carolina and Atlanta battling it out for third, while the loser gets 10th. Whoever finishes 9th this year is not going to be happy.

Leafs Talking To Phoenix

Sportsnet is saying that the Leafs have asked for permission to speak with Fletcher. This makes me think that the Cliff Fletcher to Toronto talk is still on, despite the quietness of it today. Stay tuned, this still has plenty of time to get interesting

Its That Time Of Year

First of all, I want to say thank you to all our Hockeyleaks readers. December was a tough month for us here, and we had dipped to around 5000 hits per day. I've worked really hard the last two weeks to keep the site updated and keep you all informed, and today I can say we're back up to over 30 000 hits per day, which makes me happy. Those numbers will only go up as the trade deadline approaches.

The more people I talk to today, the more I strongly believe that Marian Hossa will not be a Thrasher after the Feb. 26 deadline. Yes, the Thrashers are currently in the playoffs, but they also know how valuable Hossa is. Hossa does not plan on staying with the Thrashers beyond this season, and the Thrashers know this. Detroit is very interested in him, and is way ahead of the rest right now. Pittsburgh and San Jose also both have moderate interest at this point.

A source in Buffalo tells me that the Sabres have strong interest in bringing back JP Dumont back, longterm. This is a guy they really never wanted to lose, and now that they have the cap room, they are very interested in bringing him back.

All quiet on the Leafs' front today, what a difference a win makes. The fans chanted "fire ferguson" last night, despite the fact that the Leafs led for most of the game. The fans want change, the media wants change, and this isn't a situation that is going to go away after one win. With that said, no news on Fletcher is bad news, as today is a firm deadline on him coming in as interm GM from what I understand.

The Latest On The Leafs...again

I feel like a broken record talking about Toronto, but they really are the big story right now. Here is the latest...

Cliff Fletcher has been approached about taking over the GM duties on an interm basis. Fletcher has not commented on this, but talk around the league has him not wanting the job on an interm basis. The Leafs are searching for an interm GM, not a replacement.

The Leafs are looking at four people in the offseason: Brian Burke, Jim Rutherford, Scotty Bowman and Ken Holland. Three of the four will be difficult and could cost the Leafs a lot of cash (not important) and possibly draft picks. Bowman is the odd man out, who wouldn't cost the Leafs like the others would, but also wouldn't bring in the same experience (remember bowman has most of his success as a coach, while the others have built Cup Champs as GMs).

There are some other names being thrown around as far as interm GMs go, such as Doug Armstrong, Glen Healey and Colin Campbell, but these three are unlikely. Doug Gilmour is a name i'd keep an eye on, as he may not be the best candidate, but he may put enough of a PR spin on this to get the Leafs through the regular season and into what could be the most important off-season the Leafs have had in a very long time.

Speaking of PR spins, Scott Bowman has been doing a lot of PR work this week. First, he comes on HNIC and says how he wanted the Leafs job and was turned down. Then he goes to Detroit and tells their papers that he's not leaving Detroit, which is telling Toronto that "they can't have me". Bowman wants the Leaf's job, he's doing all this publicity for a reason. If he's offered the GM job tomorrow, I think he takes it.

Fletcher, Bowman, Gilmour, Armstrong, Healey, Holland, Burke, Rutherford. The list is very long, hopefully we learn more sooner rather than later so we can all focus back on the trade front and not the front office. The trade deadline is 43 days away, things around the league are just about to heat up.

Joseph To Flames

Just got the word, the deal is done. As reported on hockeyleaks.com's rumour mill this morning, Curtis Joseph was likely to the Flames today, and now I can confirm he has signed a one year deal with the Flames, no dollar amount confirmed yet.

Leafs Talking To Columbus

The Latest Leaf Rumour involves the Leafs making a trade with Columbus. At this point I've heard Kubina to the Blue Jackets in a deal that would involve Adam Foote coming to Toronto. The deal is much bigger than just these two players, and is still in the very early stages, but it is being discussed. As for the Leafs tonight, it looks 99% sure that Toskala will be in net for the stuggling Leafs. A loss tonight would really get the ball moving in the Toronto front office.

Curtis Joseph is likely to San Jose, with Calgary in second. I'm hearing Carolina still is very much in this.

Chicago will pull off a trade to bring a veteran d-man on Monday according to a close source. I'm working on who this d-man is.

Ferguson On His Way Out

I've been working on this for the last few hours, and according to two seperate sources I've talked to, John Ferguson Jr will be fired as the GM of the Maple Leafs. The question everyone is still trying to figure out is when. From what I have heard, the Leafs have every intention of letting go of Ferguson soon, but would like to have a replacement General Manager before they do so. MLSE understands how important this trade deadline is to the Maple Leafs, with Sundin and Kaberle being two very moveable pieces at this point. A few rumblings have Scotty Bowman being contacted, but at this time I can tell you that between now and the end of the month, it's almost a sure thing that the Leafs will have someone new filling the GM's job.

Here We Go Toronto

It has begun Toronto. After last nights terrible loss to the LA Kings, changes are finally happening in Toronto. First, the team has claimed forward Domiminic Moore off of waivers. Moore has 3 points in 30 games, so this move really doesn't make any sense to me...but we will see if there is something to follow this. Move #2 is the calling up of Jusin Pogge...does this mean Raycroft is on his way out, or are the Leafs simply going to give the kid a chance to show what he can do. I hardly believe they are going to play Pogge over Toskala, as Toskala is just back from injury and hasn't had a team in front of him since to show that he is a capable #1 goalie, something he was really showing before he got hurt against Montreal last month. Today is an interesting one in Toronto, it should be fun to watch. That being said, I wouldn't expect the Leafs to pull the trigger on a trade until they return home from California.

Curtis Joseph will play in the NHL this season, either for Calgary or San Jose...how crazy is that? You would have thought his final two would involve Pittsburgh, LA or Tampa, not two teams that have All-Star goalies, but in fact, this is the case. That being said, good for Curtis, I hope he gets a good chance to win a cup this season.

Ovechkin Update

The numbers I had earlier were wrong, actual contract is 13 years / 124 million. Thats just over 9.5 million per season. Ovechkin will not be leaving washington any time soon.

TSN is saying the Ovechkin deal is not done, but RDS is, and a few sources I've talked to have told me the deal is complete. I'll let you know if anything changes....

The Latest On Sundin and Federov

There is talk today that Colorado could be where Sundin ends up. Sundin has only played for two organizations during his career, and has always said he'd like to keep it that way. Returning to the organization to which he started is a huge option for the Swede. The Leafs have liked both Liles and Svatos for a long time, this could be their chance to land both, plus more.

The Red Wings also like Sundin, and both team like Forsberg, but if they fail to get either of them, Federov could be making his return to the Red and White. Federov has struggled since leaving Detroit, and Ken Holland is said to be willing to give the Russian a chance to rebound.

Of all teams for Ovechkin to go to, Nashville is not one of them. If Eklund somehow gets this one right, I will put my foot in my mouth, but I think my mouth is pretty safe on this one...

Carolina Claims Samsonov

The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed winger Sergei Samsonov off re-entry waivers from the chicago blackhawks. This is a great move by Carolina, as they are in need of a boost. Samsonov comes free via waivers, and thanks to the re-entry factor, they are going to pay him less than a million dollars to play 38 games plus playoffs for them. Very little risk here, but there could be a lot of reward. Great move by the Hurricanes. I'm hearing he will play tonight against one of his former teams, Boston.

A lot of talk about where Rob Blake will go, as at this point it's a sure thing that he will be traded. Carolina is one team I'm hearing loudly, while the Rangers are another. It looks like he will end up in the East, and will only be a rental player, with everyone expecting him back in LA for 08-09.

Sergei Federov to Montreal is heating up again.

First i want to apologize for the site not being updated, the HTML is written I am just having serious ftp issues, i have contacted our host and hope to have things up and running ASAP.

The Canes have placed John Grahame on waivers, which I am strongly hearing is setting up for Curtis Joseph to come and back up Cam Ward.

In Toronto, Scott Clemmenson is back in net tonight, Raycroft once again will ride the pine. Raycroft should hit waivers this weekend.
